2011 PEARLAND VBS

"Backstage With the Bible" - Join the Go Fish Guys for Vacation Bible School at Peace, 6-8:30 pm,

July 31 - August 5, 2011. Each day starts with Backstage Catering (dinner for the kids),

then a daily Concert with Encore, Backstage Set Design (crafts), Intermission (games), and Backstage Bible Study (stories). On-line registration starts June 1.

While official registration is limited to 50 kids, K-5th grade, we have room

for a lot of VBS volunteers:

HOUSTON LEARN HOW TO SWIM PROGRAMS

Learn to Swim

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with the American Red Cross, offers Learn to Swim classes for both children and adults during the summer season. A $25 fee is required per session. A session includes eight (8) 40 minute classes (Note: Pre-school Aquatics is a 30 minute class). Classes are scheduled Tuesday through Friday and the first class of each session will involve skills screening. A parent or guardian must be present at the pool during all youth classes. All participants must be 6 years old or older (except Pre-school Aquatics members). See registration form for more details.

You may pay for your class by check or money order, payable to American Red Cross. Credit card payment may be made online at
www.houstonredcross.org/learn-to-swim or at ARC Chapter Headquarters. A cash payment can only be made at ARC Chapter Headquarters.

Registration applications are available at all HPARD community centers, aquatic centers, and at the American Red Cross Headquarters, 2700 Southwest Freeway, Houston, TX 77098. You may register for classes online or by mail. Space is limited! Pre-registration is strongly encouraged!

Houston Parks and Recreation Department Aquatics Program


Pools And Water Spraygrounds

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department operates and maintains 38 outdoor swimming pools and 17 water spraygrounds. In addition, the department operates a heated indoor natatorium for citizens with disabilities located at the Metropolitan Multi-Service Center, 1475 West Gray. The outdoor swimming pools are open during the summer months. The water spraygrounds and the indoor pool at the Metropolitan Multi-Service Center for citizens with disabilities are open year-round.


2011 Summer Swim Season

For the 2011 Summer Swim Season 29 COH pools will open in 2 phases. 8 pools will remain closed and the Glenbrook park pool is closed due to construction.

The 2011 Summer Swim Season runs from May 28, 2011 – August 12, 2011. Pool entry at all pools is FREE. Pool hours are 1:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. All pools are closed on Mondays for regular maintenance.

The Memorial Park Pool will open for Lap Swimming Tuesday – Friday, 6–10 am, May 24 – October 30, or until water temperature drops below 72 degrees.

HPARD in partnership with the American Red Cross will offer Learn to Swim Classes at select pools for a fee of $25. Pools marked with an asterisk will offer Learn to Swim Classes. A pdf Learn To Swim registration form is available for you to download. Please note that the registration form should be mailed to the American Red Cross Attn: HPARD Learn-To-Swim.

Houston Parks and Summer Recreation Programs


After School Enrichment Program is offered during the school year to youth ages 6 -13. The program offers a wide range of recreational activities including arts and crafts, sports, nature, games, homework assistance, field trips and cultural and special events. The Summer Enrichment Program is a summer day-camp-style enrichment camp that offers a wide range of recreational activities including arts and crafts, sports games, field trips, entertainment, special events, and water fun. The 10-week program is offered from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday from June through August. The Summer Enrichment Program is offered at community center across the city. The Teen Recreation Program offers a variety of programs for the teen population in community centers throughout the City to meet their cultural, educational and recreational needs. Year-round programs are coordinated through the Teen Program section to provide monthly awareness activities, motivational speakers, essay competitions, talent exhibitions, teen camps, cultural exhibitions, special events and college tours.

A variety of classes are open to adults interested in exploring their creative side or pursuing physical well-being. Classes are taught by concessionaire instructors at selected community centers. Nominal registration fees are required for ceramics, aerobics, cake decorating, martial arts, flower arranging, weight training and dance.

Senior Programs are year-round and provide a social environment for seniors 55 years of age and older. Seniors can participate in a variety of recreation activities, health forum presentations, quarterly special events and field trips. Programs are held at selected community centers. No participation fees are charged.

Summer Fun & Safety Event @ The Galleria

UT MD ANDERSON CHILDREN’S CANCER HOSPITAL

TO HOST SUMMER FUN AND SAFETY EVENT AT THE GALLERIA

Children invited to come out and enjoy informative hand-on activities

WHAT: Area residents are invited to come out to the mall to partake in summer activities that are not only fun but safe as well. Interactive and educational stations will offer a hands-on way for kids and parents to learn together. There will be a sea life touch tank located outside of the play area for kids to enjoy. After learning about different sea creatures, little learners will have the option to take a Beta fish home as a pet!

LEGO will provide an interactive area onsite offering visitors the opportunity to get ‘hands-on, minds-on’ with LEGO play materials and products.

Ice at the Galleria will have representatives available to discuss their summer classes and Solstice will provide demos on sunglasses and proper sun protection. Attendees will also receive summer survival kits including everything they will need for the perfect, safe summer!

Additionally, Rainforest CafĂ©’s lovable red-eyed tree frog, Cha! Cha!, will be on-site shaking hands and taking pictures from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

COST: FREE and open to the community - donations are encouraged for those participating in the activities

$5 donation to take a Beta fish home; with a larger donation, participants will have the opportunity to take home a Beta fish and its habitat
