Summer Reading Program 2009

What is Summer Reading Program?

The Summer Reading Program (SRP) is a free incentive program to encourage kids and teens to read.

The SRP includes many diverse free educational and fun programs including entertainers, storytimes, science activities, crafts and other fun programming for kids and teens up to 18 years of age. 

Who can participate?

• Children ages 0-12.
• Teens ages 13-18
  Programs are planned specifically for each age group.

Program Dates

• June 1 - August 1, 2009

How Do I Register?

Early online registration begins May 1, 2009! Register from your home or school computer. Click here and follow the easy steps to register.

REGISTRATION CONTINUES THROUGH AUGUST 1: Visit any Houston Public Library location or register from your home computer, through August 1.

What Incentives do you receive from participating

5 books/hours

• SRP certificate 
• Chance to win a book gift set, craft set, or puppet in the weekly random drawing

10 books/hours

• Whataburger certificate redeemable for a Justaburger*
• James Coney Island coupon for a regular or cheese Coney*
• Chance to win a book gift set, craft set, or puppet in the weekly random drawing

20 books/hours

• Downtown Aquarium all day adventure pass**
• Houston Astros ticket coupon for Students grades K - 12 (Set game days as determined by the Houston Astros)**
• Ticket voucher to Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus**
• Chance to win a book gift set, craft set, or puppet in the weekly random drawing.

All participants who read 20 books or more will be entered into a final drawing for a chance to win prizes to include a laptop computer, a desktop computer, gift cards, a digital camera, and a guest spot on a national radio station.

When and where does it take place?

SRP takes place citywide beginning June 1st through August 1st.  The Houston Public Library has 38 neighborhood and HPL Express locations.  It is simple to find a library closest to you by visiting the Library web site at www.houstonlibrary.org or by calling 832-393-1313.
